What you’ll need before you begin
- Your new Trezor device (Trezor One or Trezor Model T).
- A computer with an up-to-date browser and a USB port (or USB-C adapter if required).
- A secure, private place to write and store your recovery seed (no photos, no digital copies).
- About 15–30 minutes of uninterrupted time to complete the initialization and backup.
Step-by-step: Initialize via Trezor.io/start
- Unbox and inspect. Before connecting, check the packaging for tamper-evident seals and ensure your device looks new and undamaged.
- Open your browser and go to
Trezor.io/start. This direct URL leads to Trezor’s official setup portal. Follow the on-screen prompts — always confirm you are on the genuine site before downloading or installing anything. - Connect the device. Plug your Trezor into your computer using the supplied cable. The device screen will light up and guide you through the process.
- Install or update firmware. If prompted, install the latest firmware. Firmware updates improve security and compatibility. Only accept firmware initiated from the official Trezor site during setup.
- Create a new wallet. Choose “Create a new wallet” when prompted. The device will generate your recovery seed — a series of words that restore access to your funds if the device is lost or damaged.
- Write down your recovery seed. Carefully write the seed on the supplied recovery card (or another secure medium). Verify the words in the exact order shown on the device. Never store the seed digitally (no photos, cloud, or text files).
- Set a PIN. Choose a PIN you can remember but which is not easily guessable. The PIN protects your device if it’s stolen; it is required for every session that interacts with your wallet.
- Confirm setup in the web interface. After these steps, your Trezor will be linked to the Trezor Suite (or compatible wallet software). Confirm device name and settings and you’re ready to receive crypto.
Security best practices
- Never share your recovery seed. Anyone with the seed can fully control your funds.
- Keep the seed offline. Store it in a safe location — consider a fireproof safe or a secure deposit box.
- Beware of phishing. Always type
trezor.io/startmanually or use a trusted bookmark. Check the browser address bar for the correct domain and HTTPS lock icon. - Use a strong, unique PIN. Don’t reuse PINs from other devices or accounts.
- Verify addresses on the device. When sending funds, always verify the destination address directly on your Trezor screen — not only in your browser.
- Keep firmware updated. Install official updates from Trezor to receive security fixes and improvements.
Troubleshooting common issues
Device not recognized
Try a different USB port or cable. Ensure your operating system and browser are up-to-date. If problems persist, restart your computer and reconnect the device.
Firmware update failed
Do not unplug the device during a firmware update. If the update fails, reconnect and reattempt via Trezor.io/start. Follow on-screen recovery instructions.
Lost or damaged device
If your Trezor is lost or damaged, you can restore your wallet on a new Trezor (or compatible seed-supporting wallet) using your recovery seed. This is why safe seed storage is critical.
Advanced tips
- Consider using passphrase encryption (a “25th word”) for added security — but understand the complexity and recovery implications before enabling it.
- For high-value holdings, split and store recovery words across multiple secure locations (a technique called Shamir Backup or manual split), but ensure each fragment is protected.
- Test a small transaction first to confirm everything is working before sending large amounts.
